San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD)

The site and building have been clearly organized with noisy/active and
quiet/passive zones that respond to the different needs in a child’s day.
Environmental considerations are incorporated into the architecture to provide
convection, day-lighting, and solar energy for the building. The process of
community involvement in this project has allowed for unanimous community support.
This facility is designed as both a passive and active solar school.
The classroom section is designed for natural convection to ventilate the
classrooms. The roof has five integrated photovoltaic solar collectors to
generate electric power for the school. Analog meters will be located in
the reception area to demonstrate the amount of power being generated by
the solar collectors and the amount if power being consumed by the facility.
This school will be a demonstration facility for all San Franciscans to use.
