Sensitively incorporate modern additions that fit a contemporary
lifestyle solution
We created three floors of clearly delineated space for this family.
An existing deck and solarium were removed. We opened up the existing
ground-floor interior to create a large and private master suite that
fronts the east-facing garden. The orientation of this addition brings
light from across the garden into this level of the residence, perhaps
for the first time. The living area on the main floor now extends off a
new kitchen that also overlooks the garden. A roof terrace tops this
space, with the teens' bedrooms placed here, as well. A new stair
sequence connects the levels, and the rich palette of materials
includes copper trim and oil-rubbed wood finishes. The scale of
our design solution was sensitive to the building itself and to
the neighbors. challenge
Create a tranquil garden that offers a respite from its busy urban
surroundings solution
In keeping with our studio's respect for the environment, we restored
the rear garden with native plants. We clad the back façade, which
had been shingled, in cedar. A tranquil water feature is the garden's
focal point. Water streams from a fountain through a series of small
linear pools that step down as they near the window of the master
bedroom's bath. This creates a waterfall effect whose sound is equally
appealing from inside the house and outdoors. Inside, the bath showcases
a large soaking tub, which enjoys an intimate view of the lushly
landscaped garden. With the windows thrown open, the clients hear the
water's restful sounds and say they feel like they're
bathing in a stream. |
