San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD)

450 Architects was retained to modernize and make accessible an existing historic elementary school
in the heart of San Francisco’s Marina district. The project will include new restroom facilities,
new fire alarm and sprinker systems, and a new compliant path of travel that connects the various
terraced play yards throughout the site.
450 Architects combined the needs of the school for accessiblity compliance with the community’s
desire for green space in designing their new green school yard. An accessible path meanders from
one terrace to the next while forming an amphitheatre/gathering space for children’s performances
as well as less structured activity. Other ramps on the site double as impromptu stages, seating areas,
mural backdrops, and overlooks while maintaining their primary role of providing necessary access
throughout the site.
